Children's Literacy
Literacy is the foundation upon which we learn and grow. Building literacy skills in children is one of the most effective ways to ensure they can achieve their full potential in school and throughout life. Literacy opens doors to understanding, empathy, critical thinking, and the capacity for lifelong learning.
Pandemic disruptions in children’s learning are forecast to cause a 30% increase in socioeconomic skills gaps. Approximately 25 percent of Grade 3 children in Canada are not reading at grade level.
Community Literacy
Literacy involves a continuum of learning enabling individuals to achieve their goals, develop their knowledge and potential, and participate fully in their community and broader society (UNESCO, 2021).
Cultural Literacy
Cultural literacy is understanding the traditions, regular activities and history of a group of people from a given culture. It includes the capacity to engage with these traditions, activities and history in cultural spaces. Culture is how a group of people lives. It includes their language, arts, science, beliefs and practices, and understanding of their environment. (ABC Life Literacy Canada, 2023)
Digital Literacy
Literacy involves a continuum of learning enabling individuals to achieve their goals, develop their knowledge and potential, and participate fully in their community and broader society (UNESCO, 2021).
Family Literacy
Family literacy refers to how parents, children, and extended family members use literacy at home and in the community. It occurs naturally during the routines of daily life and helps children and adults get things done.
